Great gallery! I see you have used both the canon 100-400mm and sigma 150-500mm. I'm looking to expand for a little more reach... I currently use canon 70-200mm f4. I have enough to buy either of the two or the 400mm 5.6, but do you have a favorite of the two you would recommend?
Thank you. Here are my take on these 3 lenses.
The 400mm 5.6 is the sharpest of the three by a little, but it's also the least versatile. It lacks the zoom for easy composition and no image stabilization. I think it makes a great dedicated birds in flight lens with its fast focus but not so good for static subjects. The 100-400mm is the second sharpest but not far behind from the 400mm5.6. I borrowed this lens to test and found it to be an excellent lens. The reason I bought the Sigma is because I shoot with a full frame camera and needed the extra reach. The sigma performs quite well once you master it. Image quality is just a tad less than the 100-400 and the focus is also a little slower. I have gotten many great and sharp images with the Sigma, and I don't have to crop as much with the extra reach. It's really a great lens for the money comparing it to a $7k Canon 500mm. My recommendation is to go with the 100-400mm if you shoot with a crop camera and give the Sigma a try if you shoot with a full frame. I am pretty sure you will be happy with either lens. The main thing that I found that helps with getting sharp images is to perform a proper micro focus adjustment if your camera supports it. Hope this helps and good luck. |
